What is Natural Family Planning????

I didn’t really understand what it was.  Honestly, I lumped it in with the old “Rhythm Method” of birth control.  Lately however, I’ve been hearing more and more about Natural Family Planning (NFP) as not only a natural (hormone free) method of birth control, but as a natural fertility support method.  If you have had trouble conceiving, but aren’t quite on board yet with trying the medical approach, this might be an option for you.  A couple of weeks ago, I took an awesome class at Austin Born hosted by the Austin Home Birth Meetup Group.  It was taught by a VOLUNTEER married couple who have been trained as NFP educators and also use the method themselves.   It was fascinating.

If you are looking for a natural birth control method because you’re not ready for another baby yet, or if you want to have a baby but have been struggling to conceive, check it out.  The success rates for this method are staggering, within the top 3 of ALL birth control methods, if you do it right.

The method is very scientific, based on physiology and the collection of data.  It is precise and requires discipline.  It requires much on the part of the male partner which brings many benefits to the relationship.  Another additional side benefit is the understanding it can bring about the woman’s body.  It can help you predict much about your own fertility and even give you other insights into your body and when something is not quite right.

You may be wondering if you have to be Catholic to want to use this method.  The answer is NO!  The classes offered free of charge are given by Catholic couples who have felt compelled to share this method with the world at large, but these lessons are NOT about evangelizing or judging or religion at all.  They are just couples sharing information and experience about a very effective and beneficial method for understanding your own fertility.

See here to find out about the organization and find local classes.  I’ve met people using this method who say it not only works, but gives their relationship a whole new freshness and vitality.

Happy baby making!…………….or not.
